Google to World: AdWords Need Political Freedom

When Google unveiled its Public Policy Blog earlier this week, I feared another Google PR vehicle couched in do-good speak, and so did Google’s Public Policy counterpart at Cisco, John Earnhardt.

Our trepidations were well founded. Google has unleashed a major initiative at its new blog, and it is a doozy.

Google is on a worldwide misison to stomp out political repression via content “censorship” by repressive governments…SO THAT THE GOOGLE ADWORDS AND YOUTUBE BUSINESSES CAN THRIVE GLOBALLY:

Censorship is a fundamental barrier to trade. For Google, it is fair to say that censorship constitutes the single greatest trade barrier we currently face…it affects us as a non-tariff trade barrier.

Google underscores that the $160 billion market cap worldwide corporation views censorship not as a political issue, but as a financial concern, one that risks stifling further acceleration of Google shareholder wealth:

It’s important to stress that this isn’t a political thing –- Rather, we’re seeking to ensure that our information-based industry can thrive and flourish in all corners of the world. We take seriously Google’s mission “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” To accomplish that for individuals everywhere, we need the assistance of the U.S. and other like-minded governments in combating unwarranted censorship.

BUT, how “serious” is Google really about making the information it obtains from others “universally accessible and useful”? GOOGLE.CN: Case in Google sponsored censorship point.

What IS Google very serious about? Selling more and more and more AdWords around the entire world, foreign governments be damned.

  1. Whilst I do agree (to some extent) that Google’s eyes are for profit, rather than human prosperity (they are a business though?) - I believe that they really did start out to be a ‘friendly’, ‘free’ and ‘no evil’ company. I fear that they are struggling to stick to their original feelings and plans, and falling under pressure from the more ‘inhuman’ side of business/commercial sector.

Sorry if that paragraph made no sense whatsoever, I’m tired! Keep writing - I like it round here.. :)
