TechCrunch 40? Try Silicon Alley Hot 8! PLUS CooBric for NYC Coworking Cool
Jason Calacanis has some Web-based startup advice, as he counts down with Michael Arrington to their Silicon Valley showcase of ”40 hot, new product launches” slated for later this month at the San Francisco Palace.
Meanwhile, Silicon Alley has ALREADY kicked off the hot startup season, with the NY Tech 8 demos showcased Tuesday at the Cooper Union Great Hall, all for the rock bottom admission price of $5, AND a free entrepreneurs bash last evening courtesy of CooperBricolage, proudly making sure “nyc coworking has a home.”
Scott Heiferman, Meetup.com founder, was the master of ceremonies for his own NY Tech Meetup, orchestrating a self-described “gong show.” Eight presenters were prodded to strut their “cool tech” stuff in barley more than a New York minute each (five minutes, actually, give or take); Attendees were also given their marching orders, one question max per person for the evening AND, above all, no silly business model questions allowed.
Silicon Alley’s latest crop of tech entrepreneurs nevertheless rose to the startup occasion. In their own NY Tech Meetup words:

CooperBricolage–aka CooBric–Grand Opening Party: NYC coworking (now) has a home. The vision:
“
A private cafe space for entrepreneurs, interactive designers, programmers and technologists leveraging the concept of the “Inventors Institute” originated in the late 1870s by inventor Peter Cooper. You can use “free” wifi and get a coffee and/or sandwich for a small entry fee. People in the cafe workspace are working to build businesses, artistic collaboration or simply programming for a new startup.
The goal is to create a community of entrepreneurs to work together instead of at our homes and alone - sharing (when others are receptive) and respecting (when others ask for their space). While sounding utopian, the goal is to spawn new ideas and create a fertile environment for startups to migrate to more professional spaces for their corporate growth.”
Sanford Dickert, the man that helps “make it possible for tech and design people to have a home in Manhattan,” welcomed about 150 hackers, entrepreneurs, VCs, designers, and people searching for the “next big thing,” last evening to the CooBric home–Cafe Fuego on Manhattan’s “funky” St. Mark’s Place–for a fun and inspirational grand opening mixer:
In a word. The CooBric Comm and the regulars were astounded at the turnout today. Over 150 people showed up - when we only had 60 people RSVP (granted, a number did tell us that they could not put their RSVP on the wiki). But, the turnout was astonishing.
